Nom italien apparemment formé avec la terminaison -i sur Mozzo, qui signifie jeune garçon, puis plus tard domestique, apprenti, mais dont l'apparition dans la langue semble tardive. On envisagera donc aussi un hypocoristique de Giacomo, à partir d'une forme Giacomozzi. la forme Mozzo se rencontre surtout en Vénétie, tandis que les Mozzi sont plutôt lombards.
